Firstly you will need to decide what size portrait you would like, consider landscape or portrait orientation, if you are unsure I can advise on what would best suit the reference photos you provide. Think about where in your home your portrait will be displayed, whether this will be on a table, on a wall as part of a set or as a stand alone piece as scale is important!
For custom sizing or more than 4 subjects please contact me for a quote.
REFERENCE PHOTOS
You will need at least one good quality photograph of your pet, you can decide whether you would like a full body or a head and neck portrait. It is important that the eyes are clear as this is what conveys so much of their character. Natural lighting, by a window or preferably outdoors with light source in front of your subject.
I can work from older photos if it isn't possible to take new ones, however I would usually suggest choosing a smaller sized portraits as larger portraits require much more detail.
I generally use one main photo to draw from but I recommend sending 2-3 so I can get a sense of your pets character and ensures I can see details like markings clearly. But the more the better!
Photos taken at eye level work best, this helps to avoid their features looking distorted. Photos taken at about arms length are ideal.
If you are looking for a portrait of multiple subjects, the reference photo doesn't need to include them all as I can put different photographs together. I usually ask for individual photographs as well anyway as group photographs often lack the detail I need.
If you are unsure of whether your images are suitable please feel free to email me a selection of the ones you have, I can offer advice on what are best to draw from.
